Description

These are two decorative porcelain plates, made by Thomas a subsidiary of Rosenthal, and handpainted by artists in two springtime designs, pink blossoms & leaves and strawberries & strawberry blossoms. The plates are a tad over 6 & 1/2 inches in diameter, and both are edged in gold. Both plates have artists’ signatures on the back. One looks like Harvey, and the other could be Wendell. One of the plates has a background of pastels that fade between pink, yellow and green with lovely handpainted pink blossoms. The shading and detail is so pretty and realistic. I can imagine the artist sitting outside in the garden under a blooming apple tree, and painting away! The other plate has a background of pale green then the springtime ripe red strawberries, nestled amongst leaves and a couple of strawberry flowers still blooming. Both plates definitely bring to mind the newness of spring. The green backstamp under the glaze shows the porcelain was made by the company, Thomas, which became a subsidiary of Rosenthal of Germany in 1908. This backstamp was used between 1908-1939 according to collect Rosenthal.com. The plates are in excellent antique to almost condition, with no cracks, chips or crazing. Because they are handpainted decorative plates, I see no utensil marks at an angle to the light. There is gold on the edges on both plates, and it is a bit worn, just from handling over the years. They are about 6 & 5/8 inches in diameter and weigh about 7 ounces each. They would be pretty to display in a china cabinet or hang on a wall.
