Sea glass is a naturally, physically and chemically weathered piece of glass that is found on beaches along bodies of salt water. These weathering processes produce natural frosted glass. Sea glass takes between 20 to 40 years, and sometimes as much as 100 to 200 years to acquire its characteristic texture and shape. Sea glass is also referred to as drift glass from the longshore drift process that forms the smooth edges. The color of sea glass is determined by its original source, with the most common being kelly green, brown and frosted clear. Less common colors of sea glass include white, amber, forest green, and lime green. Purple, violet citron, cornflower blue, aqua blue, red and cobalt blue are very uncommon. Only 1 in every 5000 pieces of sea glass found on the seashore are gray, pink, teal, yellow and black which makes them extremely rare and super exciting to find. In addition to sea glass, sea pottery may also be found and is intriguing to find. It's fun to imagine where it came from. Maybe it came from an old shipwreck. Maybe it was originally part of a teacup, a bowl, a plate, or a serving platter. Whose table did the piece last grace? My imagination runs wild!
